GENERAL INFORMATION - Q & A

What are the School Hours?
School hours are from 8:15 a.m. until 3:15 p.m., Monday - Friday. Students are not allowed to enter the school grounds before 8:00 a.m. (unless they are apart of our Latchkey Program).

What is "Early Dismissal?"
On the first Friday of every month there will be an early dismissal. The children will be dismissed @ 12:30 p.m. Lunch will be served on early dismissal days.

Do you offer extended hours of care/latchkey services?
BROAD STREET ACADEMY offers Before & After Care. These hours are from 7:00 a.m. until 8:15 a.m. and from 3:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Extended Care is also offered during school closings and on early dismissal days (unless stated otherwise). This service is provided for an additional fee. Please see the rate sheet for more information.

Where are the pick-up and drop-off points?
Please Note: The following information concerns pedestrian and vehicular routes around our facility: 1434-38 Belfield Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19140 In front of building—"20 Minute Limit ed Parking" signs posted Safe Pedestrian Crossways:

  • Corner, of 15th & Wingohocking Streets
  • Corner of 15th & Courtland Streets

Bike Routes: Belfield Avenue - right hand side going South - building in the middle of the block

Parents are requested: DO NOT DOUBLE PARK IN FRONT OF OUR SCHOOL. Kindly adhere to the law and protect your child from this hazardous situation.

What is the homework situation?
Teachers assign homework to be completed outside of class on a regular basis. It is necessary for students to stay current with homework assignments. Homework is a way to reinforced what was taught in the class and is a very important learning component. Every teacher has a curriculum to complete, follow and maintain. It is imperative for your child to be aware of all homework assignments and complete them on a daily basis.

What is "HANDS ACROSS OUR SCHOOL?"
This program was designed to enhance our parental involvement and support Of our school. Parents are encouraged to volunteer at our school. This will help establish relationships not only with your child's teacher but the student body as a whole.

Is there a "uniform" for gym?
Fleece warm-up suits (yellow, red, white, green or gray) & sneakers are the attire for gym. If your child does not wear the recommended attire he/she will receive an "0" for not being prepared. Gym day is Friday.

What is the attendance policy?
It is important that each child maintain regular attendance and be Punctual. Students are excused from school due to illness, death, and extreme emergencies. If your child is absent, you must call the office between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. You may also leave a message on the school secretary voice mail. After five (5) absences have occurred, a doctor's note is required. A student's absence is unexcused it we don't receive a call or a letter explaining why the child has not been in attendance. If the absence is unexcused, you forfeit your child's right to make-up any missed assignments.

ABSENCES Students must submit written notification for all planned and unplanned absences. Failure to provide a written excuse will count as an unexcused absence. An accumulation of three (3) unexcused absences will result in your child being reported to the School District of Philadelphia Truancy Department. *Please Note: Tuition is required even if your child is absent. Billing will Continue unless we are notified in writing that your child is no longer attending our school.

TARDY If your child arrives late, report directly to the office for a late slip. If tardiness becomes an ongoing problem, disciplinary action will be taken. Your child will not be allowed in the classroom without a pass from the office. Three (3) occurrences per report card period = DETENTION! Five (5) occurrences per report card period = PARENT CONFERENCE WITH PRINCIPAL!


NUTRITION - Q & A

How many meals do you serve?
Broad Stret Academy serves two meals every day, breakfast and lunch. Children are required to bring in a healthy a.m. snack daily. Please refrain from hugs, chips, and candy. Try fresh fruit, pretzels and real fruit juices.

Who supplies the meals?
Our meals are supplied by Nutritional Development Services/Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

What must I do in order for my child to participate in the food program?
Each parent must fill out a food application; the application must be submitted every week, no later than Monday morning.

How much do the meals cost, are they expensive?
Price is determined by
Nutritional Development Services, based on the information provided on the application. The eligibility categories are free, reduced, and full price. The average cost per week may be $0 - $12.00 depending on your child's eligibility status which is determined by NDS.

If my eligibility is determined to be free do I still have to pay?
No. No payment is required if your eligibility status is free.

What happens if my child eats meals and I do not have an application on file?
If a child eats meals and does not have an application on file, your account will be billed for full price meals.

How do you know if my child has eaten or not?
The consumption of meals are recorded on a daily basis by the teacher. Based on these reports, we are able to determine who has eaten and how to bill accordingly.

What do the children eat?
Each month your child is sent home with a menu.
The menu is also posted in the child's class.

When are the meals served?
Breakfast is served from 7:15- am - 8:15 am
Lunch is served from 12:30 pm - 1:20 pm
